While Gettysburg is the most known of the Civil War battles, Harrisburg, the capital of Pennsylvania, also played an important role leading up to the turning point at Gettysburg.  For secrecy and protection, the South had advanced west of Gettysburg along the South Mountain range with their objective being Harrisburg, and then Philadelphia.  The Battle of Gettysburg changed all those plans and Lee redirected his advancing army which had reached Carlisle and the west bank of the Susquehanna.  This action meant that this portion of the Confederate troops actually attacked at Gettysburg from the north!

The National Civil War Museum tells this  and many other great stories.
