Barns, Backyards and Beyond
by Susan Johnson
A hot, humid June 8th afternoon greeted us for the 19th run of
the "Orphan Car Tour." Barns, Backroads and Beyond, this year's tour,
was held in the beautiful rural Hampsted, Maryland countryside.
Inside the air conditioned American Legion Hall, sixty-six
participants eagerly awaited the 1 p.m. start. The Orphan cars, already
"warmed up," took off for the fun-filled forty-five mile run along shady,
cooler back roads (we hope).
Along the way, homemade ice-cream was to be enjoyed as well
as the wonderful collections of Herb Wessel and Dorothy Peddicord.
We thank them both for the kind invitations!
We returned to Legion Hall, hot, dusty and thirsty. A buffet dinner was served at 6pm. The beef and
fried chicken dinner, catered by "Mountaingate" from Thurmont, was first rate!
All the questions from the afternoon jaunt were finally answered (accompanied by photographic evi-
dence) amid much banter and laughter.
The coveted awards were awarded, including our 2nd annual "Over Yonder Award" given by our 2007
Orphan Car Tour hosts from Williamsport, MD, Kathy and J. Jewells. This year the long distance award went to
our own Walt and Debbie Breithaurt, who traveled from Doylestown, PA to join us.
We thank all who came out on probably one if the hottest tours we've ever had. Special thanks to Tom
and Anne Kenny, this years hosts, Jon Battle (Mr. Orphan Car Tour), Rich and Debbie Miller (our official photog-
raphers), Kathy and J. Jewells (thanks for the coolers of spring water!) and YOU who have made Barns, Back-
roads and Beyond such a success.
See you all next year for our mile-
19th Annual
