Galesville Meet
By Keith Vail
On April 4th, on a windy but otherwise pleasant day, Rod Hobbs led us
on a journey through Anne Arundel County, Maryland. We started up north,
next to the Baltimore-Washington Airport, at the Benson-Hammond House.
Built about 1830, this house was still owned by the Hammond family when the
property was sold in the late `40s to make way for the airport. The airport used
the house for storage, and it was vandalized considerably. The Ann Arrundell
County Historical Society leased the home lot from the Maryland Aviation Au-
thority in the `80s and has managed to bring the house back to a semblance of
what it was. Among the furnishings (almost none of which are original to the
house) is a Packard pump organ. At least one of the attendees is probably plot-
ting as to how to get a hold of it.
After we toured the house, Rod led us south, winding through some
beautiful rural countryside. Many of us were unaware that so much rural
ambience still existed in the County. Eventually, we reached Galesville, an old
waterfront community on the West River. We disembarked at the Pirates Cove
restaurant where we met up with
additional travelers. Everyone sur-
veyed the Packards, then went in and
had a very nice lunch. After lunch,
we surveyed the Packards again!
