The Packard Club’s Inaugural Henry Joy Tour
The dates for the Henry Joy Tour in Sept. are Wed. thru Sat., Sept. 6-9.
On
Friday, September 8 we’ll travel to east central Vermont to the
Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site in Plymouth Notch
,
which is virtually unchanged since the early 20th century. The homes of Silent Cal’s family and neighbors, community church, cheese factory, one-room school house and general store have been carefully preserved. In 2003, the Plymouth Cheese Factory reestablished production of the distinctive granular, curd-type Plymouth cheese. Colonel John Coolidge and four local farmers established the plant in 1890. Lunch will be in Woodstock today. Famous world-wide as the quintessential New England village, it has been described as the “prettiest small town in America” by Ladies Home Journal Magazine. Choose from two local favorites for lunch: The Woodstock Inn and Bentley’s. After lunch, we’ll continue east along the Ottauquechee River to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science for a tour of their raptor exhibits and flight demonstrations. Following a view of Quechee Gorge, “Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon,” and a stop at the glass blowers of Simon Pierce, we will cross the Green Mountains over the Brandon Gap for a spectacular view of New York State.
Dinner
tonight is on-your-own in Brandon.
Ticonderoga, NY awaits us on Saturday, September 9, as we
take the cable ferry from Shoreham, VT. It is one of the oldest ferry
crossings in North America. Built by the French in 1755, Fort Ticonderoga
(Carillon) played a critical strategic role in both the Seven Years’ War
and the American War for Independence. We will then journey up the
New York side of Lake Champlain to Crown Point which is the largest
English fort on the American continent, for a catered boxed lunch. We’ll
have an early start back to Brandon over a scenic route this afternoon.
Cocktails and banquet this evening will be at the Brandon Inn.
